Incorporating the Ideas & Words of Others

There are several ways to properly include words, opinions, information, and ideas from outside sources.

Quote directly:

  • Copy out the information word for word, place quotation marks around it, and then provide a citation for the information

Paraphrase:

  • Take the information or idea, completely rephrase it in your own words, and then provide a citation for the information.
  • Don’t just switch out a few words – in order to properly paraphrase, you must restate those ideas in your own words.
